  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx)
  • From USD $55.00

The most popular excursion in Cambodia is the excursion to the tamples of Angkor. You will have a great opportunity to get to know the ancient Khmer Empire, its cultural heritage and religious traditions. Today one of the largest ancient temple complexes in the world is situated here. On an area of two hundred square kilometers, there are about 200 houses of worship that have been built in different periods. The city of Angkor is the ancient capital of the Khmers and the largest city of Southeast Asia in ancient times.

Visit time and tickets

A convenient time for starting the excursion is 8 - 10 am, but if you want to meet the dawn in Angkor Wat, then you need to leave at 5 am. Tickets to the Angkor complex cost $ 37 (children under 12 years old - free of charge) per day. You can buy a three-day ticket for $ 63 or a seven-day ticket for $ 72. However, these tickets are also valid for visiting other tamples of Siem Reap, for instance, Phnom Krom or Bakor, which is 35 km from Angkor Wat.

For a small circle excursion, a tuk-tuk, a bicycle or a car is suitable. The length of the small circle is approximately 25 kilometers - from hotel to hotel, and along this way you can see such sights and tamples as:

tamples

  • Angkor Wat
  • South gates Angkor Thom
  • Phnom Bakeng
  • Bayon
  • Baphuon
  • Phimeanakas
  • Terrace of the Leper King
  • ElephantTerrace

Not all tamples can be visited during one light day - they are large enough and there may not be enough time for view. Usually the 4 - 5 largest tamples and the sunset temple Phnom Bakeng are visited.

A bit of history

Local inhabitants left the temple city in the 15th century after the capture of the peninsula by troops. Only in the 19th century, Angkor was discovered in the middle of the jungle. Beauty of the palaces and magnificent temple complexes have become available to the whole world again. All undestroyed buildings were erected on special technology from stone blocks and without the use of binders. The most famous temple in Angkor is the Angkor Wat Temple, which was erected in the 12th century. This sacred building impresses with its refinement and harmony, which is specific for Asian architecture.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat

It is a pearl of the temple complex. This temple was built during the rise of the entire Khmer civilization. Angkor Wat is the largest house of worship in the world. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a national symbol of the Kingdom of Cambodia. It usually takes 1 - 2 hours to view Angkor Wat.

South gate Angor Thom

South gate Angor Thom

The ancient city of Angkor Thom is still surrounded by a wall along the perimeter, and its perimeter is absolutely square in shape. Four walls are situated strictly in accordance with the cardinal directions. To get to the Bayon Temple, which is located in the very center, you need to pass through the south gate. This is a great place for taking of photos. Entrance to the gate is performed over the bridge over the moat, which in its turn surrounds the walls of Angor Thom. From the right and left the bridge is decorated with restored statues of angels and demons - religious characters of the ancient Khmer culture.

Bayon

Bayon

It's a temple consisting of 54 towers. The sculptures with the image of 216 Bayon's faces are often called the "Angkor's Smile". Architecturally, it's a very interesting temple. Many tourists put it first. It does not look like Angkor Wat at all, and was the central temple of the ancient Khmer empire for a long time. The temple visit time is usually 1 - 2 hours.

Elephant Terrace

Elephant Terrace

It is situated in the center of the old city of Angkor Thom. In the past, the temple was situated on the Royal Square, where the king gave audiences, hosted guests and watched the performances.

Baphuon

Baphuon

Prasat Bapuon is located 200 meters northwest of Bayon and south of the Phimeanakas Temple. Entrance to and exit from the temple are from the east.

Phimeanakas

Phimeanakas

The royal heavenly temple is interesting for its unusual architecture and height. This is the highest temple in Angkor Thom. A marvelous landscape of the nearest area opens up from the tower.

Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm

This temple has already partially been cleared of the jungle. In 2012, the Cambodian government decided to cut down several giant trees that encircled the walls of the temple because of the serious threat of their damage. However, the trees that remained still make an unforgettable impression. The famous movie "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" starring Jolie was filmed at Ta Prohm Temple. Curious to relate, but the temple, which has almost a thousand-year history, got the name "Temple of Angelina Jolie". The name of the temple Ta Prohm is translated as a tower of five golden peaks. The construction carries the positive energy with what the temple was endued by Buddhist monks in the 14th century. This energy can be felt by everyone who visits the temple.
